    Beginning with Encaustic Wax

Beeswax has been used for centuries in arts, and the modern technology has made it accessible to all artists.

Still, as with any new-to-you medium, there is an plethora of information and choices to be made as to how, exactly, to proceed, and with what supplies!

In this overview of encaustic painting, the goal is to explain how encaustic works, and what the average person will need to create paintings on wood using filtered beeswax and pigments.

All supplies are included to make at least three small , ready-to-hang works. Students will have guidence to use heat guns and, torches...yes, real scary torches...to bring out the semi-transparent  textures of the paint and wax.

    "After Harvey", student work.

Class limited to 12, minimum of 4

$165 for WAL members, $185 for non-members. This is a "supply-heavy" class, so you must sign up in advance. Last minute sign-up must be OK'd by instructor.

Painting the Impressionistic Landscape in Oils

Let’s boost your landscapes to the next level.

Your instructor, Marty Hatcher, will introduce to you a fresh look at old painting problems, getting stuck, paint application, value, color, design, not knowing when to stop, or how to start.

She will look at your individual work and investigate ways to solve problems you see, or perhaps suggest new approaches you have not yet considered. We will revisit tried and true methods we all have in our painters tool kit and look at some new tools and ways to approach your painting as well.

There will be demo’s, lectures, and lots of individual attention.  It will be a fun and information-filled 3 days!

Dates: Friday June 9th thru Sunday, June 11th, 2023

Times: 9am to 3:30pm with 30 minute lunch break, please bring a lunch with you

    Members $375, Non-members $390

    More about Marty

Marty Hatcher studied art at UTA and became an illustrator while still in school. After working as an illustrator for Neiman Marcus and several other companies, Marty studied with some of the best painters and painting instructors of our time, including Scott Christensen, CW Mundy, and Hong Nian Zhang, to name only a few. She attributes her personal leap forward as a painter to the numerous workshops she has taken. She has had many one man shows, won many awards, and taught throughout the US and abroad. Her passion for painting is run by a close second to her passion for learning and teaching.

Supply list for this workshop can be viewed here. For specific questions about supplies or the workshop, Marty's contact information is listed on the supply list.
