Still Life and Flowers workshop


October 14th & 15th. 9:30 to 4:00

Join Tom for a two-day intensive Still Life and Flowers workshop in The Woodlands, Texas. Tom will work with his students to create a still life that includes flowers. Students will watch Tom demo each day and then receive personalized one-on-one instruction and critiques of their work as they paint.

Overview:

This workshop is designed to help the artist of any level (even beginners) understand and experience the process of setting up, drawing and then painting a still life that includes flowers. Tom will be demonstrating and working with graphite and oil paint however artists using other mediums such as charcoal, acrylics, water color or even digital drawing and painting are welcome to participate.

Workshop topics will include

Day One:

Set up and composition of a still life with flowers.

Drawing the still life

Understanding perspective

Understanding form

Transfer the drawing to panel or canvas

Day Two:

Color theory (Munsell Color System)

Layered approach to painting still life

Second pass and beyond (Finishing the painting) 

Each morning and afternoon will begin with a demonstration of the days objectives

Materials List

Drawing:  

  • Drawing pencils of various hardness (4H, 2H, H, HB, 2B and 4B)
  • Pencil Sharpener or Xacto knife
  • Sandpaper board or individual sheets of Sandpaper
  • Pencil style erasers (1 thin and 1 thicker)
  • Kneaded Eraser
  • Strathmore 400 drawing paper pad (I prefer 18 x 24) 
  • Drawing or sketch board with clips or clamps (19.5 x 25.5 is best)
  • Artist tape (blue or white)

Painting:

  • Paint pallet
  • Paints 
    • Titanium White
    • Cadmium Yellow Light
    • Yellow Ocher
    • Transparent Yellow Oxide
    • Raw Umber
    • Cadmium Orange
    • Cadmium Red
    • Magenta (Optional)
    • Alizarin
    • Burnt Umber
    • Transparent Red Oxide (PR 101) - Windsor and Newton (Burnt Sienna)
    • Viridian
    • Cerulean Blue
    • Cobalt Blue (Optional)
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Van Dyke Brown
    • Ivory Black
    • Gray (Value 5)
  • Canvas, Paper, Prepared boards or panels ( any size 8 x10 or larger )
  • Brushes (variety of sizes and styles for medium of choice: oil, acrylic or oil)
    • Rounds
    • Flats
    • Filbert (optional)
  • Pallet knife(s) 2 Small, 1 Medium
  • Container(s) for cleaning brushes and thinning paint
  • Gamsol odorless paint thinner for brush cleaning and thinning if painting in oil
  • Paper Towel
