Our History:
With membership being not much more than a handful, The Woodlands Art League began meeting at Trinity Episcopal Church in 1981. The guest artist would speak or demonstrate while members sat in pews. Artwork was displayed along the walls of the sanctuary. As time passed and membership grew, meeting space would move as The Woodlands itself was growing and developing. During those early years, The Woodlands Corporation helped provide space for the group. One of those spaces included a Gallery at The Wharf in The Village of Grogan’s Mill.
By 1984 membership had grown to over 100 artists. WAL sponsored art classes at what was then a psychiatric hospital along I-45. WAL members had galleries in the Woodlands Inn building. WAL sponsored national level workshops by Tom Browning, Mary Jane Cox, Bill Kalwick, Bob Rohm, Betty Carr, Bobbie Kilpatrick, and more.
Around 1995 the new Montgomery College Art Gallery opened. WAL began regular quarterly shows with members sitting the Gallery daily.
WAL sponsored the 1999-2000 Lone Start Art Guild Convention at The Woodlands Inn and Resort Center. There were over three hundred and twenty five artists present, nine demonstrators, and four national workshops to attend.
Right around WAL’s 25th Anniversary, Trademark Properties offered a space at Market Street. WAL turned the space into Local Color Gallery. The Gallery was open for close to one year. It was a very successful venue for members to share artwork with the community.
This year WAL celebrates it's 30th Anniversary. Once again Trademark Properties welcomed WAL in Market Street to set up a gallery space and studio for classes and workshops. The league has now grown to include over 400 members! We've been working as a Charity Partner for The Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival for the past 4 years now and plan to have our very own fundraiser this coming year called Paint the Woodlands. Please join us as we grow with the community to offer more events for artists and non artists alike!
